A customer with a highly custom PCB featuring an exposed LED was spending thousands to have their assemblies potted. The LED required environmental protections but the potting must not cover the LED. The problem was that potting was inconsistent, the orientation of the PCB was sometimes crooked, the potting material could finish with air bubbles and the LED was not always oriented in the same way. The solution was simple for us, overmolding. We had a custom design of a proposed overmold 3D printed to present the customer with. Upon review the customer was ecstatic and immediately invested in the new tooling. The result was a finished product that cost 75% less than the potted version with 100% consistency on every build. The cost of tooling provided ROI immediately.
